Estimates: Wall Street sees American Express earnings per share swelling 14% to $1.80, according to Zacks Investment Research. Revenue is seen popping 20% to $10.6 billion.

Results: EPS of $1.74 on revenue of $10.47 billion. Consumer services revenue rose 11% to $5.6 billion. Commercial services revenue increased 8% to $3.3 billion. Merchant and network services revenue was flat at $1.6 billion.

Consolidated provisions for losses climbed 14% to $954 million due to growth in the loan portfolio and higher lending write-off rates. Consolidated expenses grew 9% to $7.7 billion, led by higher rewards and other customer engagement costs.

Outlook: 2019 EPS is seen at $7.85-$8.35, with the midpoint of $8.10 below consensus views for $8.17, on expected revenue growth of 8%-10%, above consensus views for 7.7% growth.

American Express (AXP) Q4 Earnings Beat on Higher Revenues

American Express Co. AXP reported fourth-quarter 2019 earnings of $2.03 per share, which surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1.5% and were up 16.7% year over year.

Total revenues of $11.4 billion came in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate and were up 9% year over year.  This is the 10th straight quarter in which the company posted foreign exchange adjusted revenue growth of at least 8%. Increase in earnings was driven by a well-balanced mix of growth in fee, spend and lend revenues.

Total expenses of $8.4 billion increased 9% year over year, due to growth in rewards and other customer engagement costs driven by increased Card Member spending, and higher usage of card benefits and operating expenses.

AmEx (AXP) Q3 Earnings Miss Due to Lower Spending on Its Cards


American Express Co. AXP reported third-quarter 2020 earnings of 1.30 per share, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 6.5%. Also, the bottom line plunged 38% year over year.

Earnings in the third quarter took a hit from weak spending volumes as a result of the adverse COVID-19 impact.

Even though total revenues of $8.75 billion beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1.2%, the same declined 20% year over year.
