Southwest 4Q profit falls, federal shutdown hurts revenue

DALLAS (AP) -- Southwest Airlines says it has lost $10 million to $15 million so far from the partial government shutdown but overall travel demand remains strong, boosting the carrier's outlook for first-quarter revenue.

Southwest said it earned $654 million in the fourth quarter, down 63 percent from $1.75 billion a year earlier.

The profit of $1.17 per share beat the average forecast of $1.06 from 12 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research.

Revenue rose 8.5 percent to $5.7 billion, narrowly beating the analysts' forecasts. Spending on jet fuel and labor costs both rose.

Southwest Posts Earnings Beat Despite 'Headwinds' Related to MAX Grounding

Southwest Airlines reports better-than-expected first-quarter earnings despite what the company itself described as 'unexpected headwinds' related to the grounding of Boeing's 737 MAX jets.

Southwest earned $387 million, or 70 cents a share, in the quarter vs. $463 million, or 79 cents a share, in the same period a year ago. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had been looking for earnings of about 61 cents a share.

Operating revenue rang in at a record $5.1 billion, the company said.

Geschäftsreisen legen zu, sind aber weiter 75 Prozent unter normalem Niveau.  Haben derzeit nicht genügend Flugzeuge.
Tourismus sorgt für starke Nachfrage. 
Der Kuchen ist geschrumpft, haben aber mehr Marktanteil erobert.
