U.S. stocks recoup some pre-Thanksgiving losses

U.S stocks finished higher on Wednesday, recouping some losses from the worst start to a Thanksgiving week in nearly half a century. The tech-dominant Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.92% was the best-performing major index, closing up 0.9%, the S&P 500 SPX, +0.30% added 0.3% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.00% lagged, finishing the session unchanged. In economic news, jobless claims rose to 224,000 and durable goods orders fell 4.4%. Elsewhere, in company news, shares of Footlocker Inc. FL, -0.03% climbed 15% following a third-quarter earnings beat. U.S. financial markets are closed for Thanksgiving on Thursday.

S&P 500 ends in correction on Black Friday as oil endures a fresh pummeling to end the week

U.S. stocks closed firmly lower Friday, pressured again by falling oil prices that drove the three main benchmarks to losses of at least 3.8%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.73% closed down 0.7% at 24,285, the S&P 500 index SPX, -0.66% ended the session with a decline of 0.7% at 2,632, putting the broad-market index in correction territory, usually defined as a decline of at least 10% from a recent peak. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, -0.48% finished the abbreviated session off 0.5% at 6,938, deepening descent into correction. U.S. stock markets closed at 1 p.m. in post-Thanksgiving trade, which is typically marked by low trading volumes that can exacerbate declines.

U.S. stocks close higher as retailers rally on Cyber Monday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +1.46% climbed 354.29 points, or 1.5%, to 24,640.24, while the S&P 500 index SPX, +1.55% rose 40.89 points, or 1.6%, to 2,673.45. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, +2.06%  rallied 142.87 points, or 2.1%, to 7,081.85.

Last week, the Nasdaq tumbled 4.3%, the Dow fell 4.4% and the S&P 500 slid 3.8%, marking the worst Thanksgiving week since 2011 for all three indexes.

What drove the market?
Losses for oil prices pushed stocks lower last week, and the reverse was true for Monday. After losing 7.7% in Friday’s session alone, U.S. crude futures CLF9, +2.36%  gained more than 2% to trade above $51 a barrel, while Brent crude LCOF9, +2.89%  also rose above $60.

Stocks end slightly higher as Dow logs nearly triple-digit gain

Stocks finished slightly higher even as trade tensions returned to the fore after President Donald Trump refused to rule out increasing tariffs on Chinese imports in 2019. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.33% ended higher by 0.3% at around 7,083, based on preliminary figures. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.44% advanced around 109 points, or 0.4%, to end near 24,740. The Nasdaq composite COMP, +0.01% was little changed near 7,083. Trump's remarks come ahead of the G-20 summit in Buenos Aires later this week where he will meet China's leader Xi Jinping.
