Point of Control (POC) - The single price level in a given period where the most volume was traded.
Profile High - The highest price level achieved during the specified time period.
Profile Low - The lowest price level achieved during the specified time period.
Value Area (VA) - The area where a certain percentage of the total volume was traded during the period. Usually, this percentage is set at 70%.
Value Area High (VAH) - The highest price level within the value area.
Value Area Low (VAL) - The lowest price level within the value area.
Tips and tricks
As with most other tools or analyses, there are a number of uses for the Volume Profile.
One common strategy is to analyze where the value ranges of previous periods are in comparison to current prices. If the current prices are outside the value range of a previous period, it can be assumed that an asset is trending. If the price is still within the value range of a prior period, the asset can be considered to be in consolidation. Trend identification and consolidation are often used in conjunction with trend following or mean reversion strategies.
Another common strategy is to use " Virgin" Point of Controls (VPOCs) as key levels in an asset. VPOCs are levels that have not been retested and are unaffected by current price trends since their formation. The idea is that if there has been a lot going on at a particular price, the largest market participants are likely to have positions at that level. This can lead to predictable behavior that observant traders can take advantage of.
