December jobs report: US economy adds 216,000 jobs, shocking Wall Street again

The US economy added 216,000 jobs in the month of December, up from 173,000 the previous month, surprising Wall Street once again to close out 2023.

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics released on Friday showed the unemployment rate was 3.7% for the month, flat from the rate seen in November.

Here are the key metrics compared to what Wall Street expected, according to data from Bloomberg:

    Nonfarm payrolls: 216,000 vs. 175,000 (+1173,000 previously)

    Unemployment rate: 3.7% vs. 3.8% (3.7% previously)

    Average hourly earnings, month-on-month: 0.4% vs. +0.3% (+0.4% previously)

    Average hourly earnings, year-on-year: 4.1% vs. 3.9% (+4.0% previously)

    Average weekly hours worked: 34.3 vs 34.4 (34.4 previously)
