Canopy Growth Soars as Piper Jaffray Recommends the Cannabis Stock

Canopy Growth climbs after Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Lavery initiate coverage on the Canadian cannabis company.

Canopy Growth Corp.  (CGC) climbed 9% on Wednesday after Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Lavery initiated coverage on the Canadian cannabis company and Tilray Inc.  (TLRY) with overweight ratings. 

Shares of Tilray were rising 0.6%.

Lavery said in a research note to investors that the global cannabis market has the potential to reach $15 billion to $50 billion in the near term and $250 billion to $500 billion on the long term.

Canopy Growth (NYSE: CGC), a top Canadian pot company, is up big again today. Shares of the pot titan bolted higher yesterday on a particularly rosy upgrade from analysts at Piper Jaffray. And the company's stock is getting yet another boost today from an unrelated bit of news: an upbeat earnings outlook provided by its partner Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ).

During Constellation's quarterly conference call, held yesterday morning, the beverage giant implied that Canopy is on track to far surpass Wall Street's revenue expectations over the next 18 months. Specifically, Constellation's president and COO Bill Newlands noted during the call that he believes Canopy will haul in approximately 1 billion Canadian dollars in revenue over the course of the next year and a half.

Cannabis-Hersteller steigert Produktion, Aktie rauscht in Keller

Der weltweit größte Cannabis-Hersteller, Canopy Growth aus Kanada, vervierfacht seine Produktion und den Umsatz im Quartal von April bis Juni im Vorjahresvergleich - macht aber weiter kräftig Verlust. Canopy Growth habe in den drei Monaten 40 Tonnen Cannabis geerntet, teilte das Unternehmen mit. Der Umsatz stieg entsprechend um 300 Prozent auf rund 103 Millionen kanadische Dollar (knapp 70 Millionen Euro).

Der Verlust stieg von 91 Millionen Dollar im Vorjahresquartal auf 1,281 Milliarden Dollar (863 Millionen Euro). Canopy Growth erklärte diesen steilen Anstieg unter anderem mit Investitionen in den USA. Nach der Legalisierung von Cannabis in mehreren US-Bundesstaaten eröffnete das kanadische Unternehmen dort Filialen und stellte Mitarbeiter ein.

Canopy Growth ist an der Wall Street in den USA und an der Börse in Toronto notiert und mit einem Börsenwert von umgerechnet 9,9 Milliarden Euro der größte Cannabis-Hersteller weltweit. Der Aktienkurs ist seit der Legalisierung der Droge in Kanada allerdings stetig gefallen. Zur Wochenmitte gab der Kurs um 6,6 Prozent nach, im elektronischen Handel nach Börsenschluss beschleunigte sich der Fall nach Veröffentlichung der Quartalszahlen und die Aktie lag elf Prozent im Minus.

Canopy Growth Corporation (CGC) came out with a quarterly loss of $0.82 per share versus the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of $0.27. This compares to loss of $0.76 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items.

This quarterly report represents an earnings surprise of -203.70%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this company would post a loss of $0.29 per share when it actually produced a loss of $0.23, delivering a surprise of 20.69%.

Over the last four quarters, the company has surpassed consensus EPS estimates just once.

Canopy Growth Corporation, which belongs to the Zacks Medical - Products industry, posted revenues of $58.03 million for the quarter ended September 2019, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 24.73%. This compares to year-ago revenues of $17.85 million.
