Airline stocks suffer broad selloff as economic growth, oil price concerns prompt sector downgrade

Airline stocks were knocked lower Friday, with the sector on track to suffer the biggest one-day loss in nearly 3 years, as the recent drop in oil prices and concerns over a slowing economy acted as a one-two punch for the group. The NYSE Arca Airline Index XAL, -5.29% slid 5.1% toward a fourth-straight decline. Friday's loss was headed for the biggest one-day loss since Feb. 26, 2016.

Among the sector's more active components, shares of American Airlines Group Inc. AAL, -9.47% plunged 9.1%, Delta Air Lines Inc. DAL, -4.05% dropped 4.3%, JetBlue Airways Corp. JBLU, -5.68% tumbled 5.8% Southwest Airlines Co. LUV, -4.40% lost 4.1% and United Continental Holdings Inc. UAL, -5.66% shed 5.4%. The airline index has lost 6.0% over the past three months

Konkurrenz mit US-Gesellschaften - Katar steigt bei Chinas größter Airline ein

Qatar Airways ist bei Chinas größter Airline eingestiegen. Die staatliche Fluggesellschaft des Emirats Katar hat Ende Dezember einen Anteil von fünf Prozent an der börsennotierten China Southern Airlines Co erworben und will nun die Zusammenarbeit zwischen den Fluggesellschaft ausbauen, wie sie mitteilte. Auf Basis aktueller Aktienkurse hat die Beteiligung einen Wert von rund 530 Millionen US-Dollar.

Airline stocks fly after earnings, but shutdown could cause turbulence

Airline stocks are flying high on Thursday, following upbeat earnings reports from American Airlines Group Inc., JetBlue Airways Corp. and Southwest Airlines Co.

American Airlines AAL, +4.30%  was the biggest gainer of the pack at the open, and shares are now up 6%. The company topped expectations with its earnings and passenger revenue and discussed plans to expand at the Dallas airport, one of its most profitable hubs. Southwest LUV, +5.09%   beat on the top and bottom lines as well, though the company missed expectations for its load factor. JetBlue JBLU, +3.83%  rounded out the trio with another set of beats, though the company warned that the timing of Easter and Passover this year will likely impact revenue comparisons for the first quarter.

Hohe Ölpreise belasten Airline-Aktien

Der Luftfahrtsektor steht angesichts weiter anziehender Ölpreise unter Druck. An den Finanzmärkten wird nun eine weitere Verknappung des Ölangebots befürchtet. Der Iran hat bereits mit einer Schließung der Straße von Hormuz gedroht.

Lufthansa verloren 2,1 Prozent, IAG 2,6 Prozent und Air France 4,4 Prozent.

Virus bringt Airlines massive Umsatzeinbußen

Der internationale Luftfahrtverband Iata rechnet wegen der Coronavirus-Krise mit deutlich höheren Umsatzeinbußen im Passagiergeschäft. Je nach Verlauf der Epidemie dürften die Airlines weltweit in diesem Jahr 63 bis 113 Milliarden US-Dollar weniger einnehmen, hieß es.
