Biden’s Energy Plan Is Only as Ambitious as BP’s

...Even oil and gas companies are preparing for a drastic change in energy consumption, one that’s essentially in line with Biden’s vision. Whereas in 2019, Biden might have been ahead of the wave, the former vice president is now surfing on top of it, pushing policies that are in line with companies that were once seen as public enemy number one by environmentalists....
....BP (ticker: BP) isn’t the only company preparing for a clean energy future.
Valero’s (VLO) business refining crude is falling apart, but it’s making a
growing amount of money turning discarded cooking oil into diesel. French oil giant Total (TOT) is spending $3 billion a year on renewables projects. Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A), like BP, is aiming to produce net zero carbon emissions by 2050. To get there, both Shell and BP are
investing aggressively in wind and solar power and divesting some of their fossil fuel assets.
Investors have already transitioned.
NextEra Energy (NEE), a renewables-focused utility, recently leapfrogged
ExxonMobil (XOM) in market value. Renewable energy companies
are up 57% this year, even as oil and gas producers are down 53%....
....Oil and gas extraction still employs 156,000 people in the U.S., but that number has been on the decline, dropping from 200,000 in 2014. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects faster growth in some renewable energy jobs than in oil and gas professions. The job classification with the fastest expected growth rate between 2019 and 2029 is wind power service technicians, with a 61% expected growth rate, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The third fastest-growing job is solar installer, with a 51% growth rate. (Number two is nurses.)...
