Newmont takes top gold producer spot with $10 billion Goldcorp buy

(Reuters) - Newmont Mining Corp (NEM.N) said on Monday it would buy smaller rival Goldcorp Inc (G.TO) (GG.N) for $10 billion (£7.7 billion), creating the world's biggest gold producer in the face of dwindling easy-to-find reserves of the precious metal.

The transaction, the biggest ever takeover in the gold sector according to Refinitiv, follows Barrick Gold Corp's (ABX.TO) agreement in September to buy Randgold Resources Ltd in a deal valued at $6.1 billion.

"Combining forces will give us the sector's best project pipeline and exploration portfolio," Newmont Chief Executive Gary Goldberg said on a conference call with analysts. "These prospects translate to the gold sector's largest reserve and resource base."

Vancouver-based Goldcorp's Toronto-listed shares rose 7 percent to C$13.75 at 12:03 p.m. ET (1703 GMT). Newmont Mining's shares were down about 8.8 percent at $31.83 in New York.

Newmont Mining Slips Despite Posting Better-Than-Expected Earnings

The gold and copper producer posts earnings well above analysts' forecasts, driven by steady gold and copper production and reduced expenses.

The company reported adjusted earnings of $214 million, or 40 cents a share, for its fourth quarter, compared to $206 million, or 38 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had expected per-share earnings of 25 cents.

Excluding tax- and valuation-related adjustments, the company said it earned 7 cents a share in the quarter. Revenue rose to $2.05 billion vs. $1.94 billion in the same period last year. Attributable gold production, a measure of the company's actual gold-mining efforts, was 1.44 million ounces, an increase of 8% from the prior year quarter.

Der US-Bergbaukonzern Newmont Mining hat das Übernahmeangebot des kanadischen Bergbaukonzerns Barrick Gold abgelehnt.

Die derzeitig laufende Übernahme von Goldcorp durch Newmont selbst biete mehr Vorteile für die Aktionäre, teilte das Unternehmen am Montag in Denver mit. Gleichzeitig schlägt Newmont Barrick jedoch eine Zusammenarbeit in Nevada im Rahmen eines Joint Ventures vor.

eigentlich geht es ihm um geschwächten Wettbewerb durch das Phänomen "common ownership", also identische Eigentümerstrukturen. Asset Manager wie Blackrock, State Street und Vanguard halten meist nur relativ kleine Anteile von vielleicht fünf Prozent des Kapitals. Zusammen kommen die identischen Eigentümer aber häufig auf 20 bis 25 Prozent - und dies bei unmittelbaren Konkurrenten.

Newmont Corporation (NEM) Lags Q1 Earnings and Revenue Estimates

Newmont Corporation (NEM) came out with quarterly earnings of $0.40 per share, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.43 per share. This compares to earnings of $0.33 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items.

This quarterly report represents an earnings surprise of -6.98%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this gold and copper miner would post earnings of $0.48 per share when it actually produced earnings of $0.50, delivering a surprise of 4.17%.

Over the last four quarters, the company has surpassed consensus EPS estimates just once.

Newmont, which belongs to the Zacks Mining - Miscellaneous industry, posted revenues of $2.58 billion for the quarter ended March 2020, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 3.78%. This compares to year-ago revenues of $1.80 billion.

Im jahr 2020 betrug die weltweite Goldproduktion 2.701 Tonnen, der kombinierte Anteil von Newmont und Newcrest wäre mit 240 Tonnen schon über 8%. Sie übertreffen die Produktionsleistung ganzer Länder wie Kanada oder USA, mit ihren kombinierten Reserven von etwa 4.500 Tonnen übertreffen sie Länder wie Russland und dürften grob geschätzt 10% aller Weltreserven besitzen.
