Shopify shares slide 5% premarket after posting loss

Shopify Inc. shares SHOP, -4.56% fell 5% in premarket trade Tuesday, after the multi-channel shopping platform posted a loss for the fourth quarter. The company said it had a net loss of $1.514 million, or 1 cents a share, narrower than the $2.987 million loss, or 3 cents a share, posted in the year-earlier period. Adjusted per-share earnings came to 26 cents a share, ahead of the 21 cents FactSet consensus. Revenue rose to $343.9 million from $222.8 million, also ahead of the FactSet consensus of $327.0 million.

Shopify ist mittlerweile die vermutlich größte Online Shop-Plattform weltweit.
2006 wurde sie vom deutschen Auswanderer Tobi Lüttke in Kanada gegründet. Und das
obwohl er eigentlich nur einen Online-Shop für einen Snowboardladen erstellen wollte.
Unzufrieden über die damals verfügbaren Lösungen, beschloss er letztendlich, seine eigene Plattform
zu programmieren. Das Ziel war klar: eine bequeme Möglichkeit zu schaffen,
Produkte online zu verkaufen und dem Verkäufer alle technischen Hürden zu ersparen.
Seine anfangs noch kleine E-Commerce-Plattform wurde ein Riesenerfolg: Heute gibt Shopify an,
dass es schon mehr als 600.000 Unternehmen gibt, die sich für den Verkauf von Produkten
auf diese Plattform verlassen.
Da es nur einen 14-tätigen Gratistest, aber keinen kostenlosen Tarif gibt, ist diese Zahl wirklich beeindruckend.

Shopify (SHOP) came out with quarterly earnings of $0.43 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.23 per share. This compares to earnings of $0.26 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items.

This quarterly report represents an earnings surprise of 86.96%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this cloud-based commerce company would post earnings of $0.11 per share when it actually produced earnings of $0.13, delivering a surprise of 18.18%.

Over the last four quarters, the company has surpassed consensus EPS estimates four times.

Shopify, which belongs to the Zacks Internet - Services industry, posted revenues of $505.16 million for the quarter ended December 2019, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 4.75%. This compares to year-ago revenues of $343.86 million.
